Our new 2024 course has started!
Final Applications lecture
Dear all,
On Tuesday Aug 1st at 16:30 Somali time, we will have the final applications lecture: Statistics & building Apps with no prior coding Experience. It will be given by Hamze Jama & Khaled Bihi, who took the course last year and are now routinely applying their new skills. They will take you on an enlightening journey into the realm of Statistics and App Building with no prior coding experience, empowered by AI. You will discover how AI-driven tools and platforms are revolutionizing app development, enabling individuals to create sophisticated applications without writing code. Join them to explore the fusion of statistical insights and AI capabilities. Hamze & Khalid will present in the Somali language to make it easier to understand.

Application Talk CANCELLED
Dear all,
I am really sorry but the applications talk for tomorrow is cancelled. Our speaker cannot make it due to unforeseen circumstances. On Wednesday Dr Chiara will continue her lecture and we have another applications talk next week.
Application Lecture 11 – Data in the Cockpit: Enhancing Pilot Training with Eye Tracking and Data-driven Feedback
On Tuesday afternoon, July 18th at 16:30 Somali time, Dr Thomay will speak about a project where they developed a system to train pilots. The system monitors where the pilots are looking and then adapts the system response. This is a very impressive project. It is also very interesting for people working in different type of control rooms. It tells you where alarm lights should be, what output needs to be where and so on. What are people missing when they need to respond quickly to many signals? The training system uses the tracking data to quickly respond. The technical challenge of that is impressive. I hope that you will join.
Application lecture 10 – Project VANA
In the war against climate change, Project Vana was created with the mission of enabling and fueling government and corporate activism to save the world. Vana is the name of the technology platform that aggregates eco-transparency data which allows the goal of detecting afforestation opportunities in corporate-owned land. This gives public, private and voluntary organisations the ability to easily access and understand what information is currently available about them in the public domain, so they can work towards achieving their ESG goals.
This project is very relevant in the Somali context as it mines data bases to find data about land use and ownership. It is especially relevant to those of you from CSI. I hope all of you will join and enjoy the talk.
The talk starts 16:30 Somali time on Tuesday the 11th. Please follow the link in the green box.
Statistics lectures
Dear all,
you can find the recordings for both statistics lectures in the recordings folder and the slides in the materials folder when you follow the teaching material link.
Application lecture 9
Neil Headings will give us an applications talk today at 16:30 Somali time. We moved the starting time back to allow more time for prayer. Neil will speak about confidence in data science models. We touched upon this in our last teaching session and will do so again tomorrow. Making models and doing calculations is important, but how can you be certain that the answers are correct? How confident are you? Neil is working in the nuclear industry where one cannot make mistakes. This topic is very relevant in the Somali context as well. In many applications running from government to business, you try to predict patterns and develop solutions for problems that you expect. This ranges from buying and selling stocks to where to build roads and houses and how much tax income does the government expect. I hope all of you will join us.
Please use the green link on the right to join.
Applications Talk 5 – AI in the real world
The next application talk (Tuesday June 6th) will be given by Dr Chris Lucas. Chris works as a Computer Vision Research Engineer at Tractable. He uses AI to extract information from images. One application is to look at images of cars to find damage or identify salvageable parts of a seriously damaged car. The technology can also be used to assess the structural integrity of buildings and other applications where you want to learn things from images.
The talk will start at 14:20 UK time, with is 16:20 Somali time. To join, follow the link in the green box to the right.
